Stayed at  Transcontinental Hotel Paris - Paris, France.
We visited Paris, among other European countries by joining a tour departed from Hong Kong about 10 years ago. This time, we decided to travel to France only and arranged everything on our own. We planned to go to Paris, Mont St Michel, the Chennoceaux and the Provence. It involved a lot of work in planning the itinerary as we don't have any friends in France. When we told our friends in Hong Kong that we would have a trip to France, their first reaction was that there would be great dificulties as we did not know French. They had the impression that the people there were arrogant and were not helpful if you did not speak French. They said that you had to speak at least some simple French in order to get help from the local people. In the circumstances, we bought a small dictionary and made an effort to learn simple French on our own.

We were rather excited when we got on our way. In most of the information centres we visited, the staff could speak English and were very helpful. Yet, we met two unfriendly staff at the ticket booking offices, one in Montparnasse Railway Station and one in Avignon Railway Station. We rented a car for two days and drove to the villages Gordes, Rousillon, the Boris village, Abbet Seneque, Pont du Gard, and Nimes. We met some difficulties as the road signs were not clear enough and the other drivers were racing on the road. We lost our ways a few times. Fortunately, we still met good guys who tried hard to show our ways even though we could not communicate with each other. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our trip as there were lots of fun and the monuments we visited were fantastic. Though we had bad experience with some unfriendly people, this did not give a bad overall impression. Most of them were friendly and helpful.

Stayed at  Acanthe - Paris Suburbs, France.
It is possible to walk to the Eiffel Tower from the hotel, but this takes about 90 minutes (each way, allowing for a coffee stop en route - almost inevitable in Paris!)

Stayed at  Aberotel Montparnasse - Paris, France.
This part of Montparnasse is pleasant but it would take at least 20-25 minutes on foot (with luggage in tow) to get to the Air France airport coach stop near the Montparnasse Station. The coach from Orly stops there too and there is also a coach stop bound for Charles De Gaulle.

Stayed at  Relais St Michel - Mont St. Michel, France.
Beautiful part of Normandy coast! Anyone that is in Normandy should not miss a visit to Saint Michel...It is gorgeous!

Paris is of course a very nice destination. Food and entertainment is extremely expensive.

Paris is a beautiful place, but visiting it in January, in the coldest spell in Paris' history was not the best time! It is very easy to negotiate Paris using the Metro and we purchased a ticket that allowed us to take unlimited trips for the time of our stay. We also purchased a 3 day card (Paris Pass) that gives you access to selected museums and monuments without having to queue. Although this wasn't a problem at this time of year, this would be very valuable during the busy summer months.

The best place we visited was the Musee D'Orsay, which is in a converted train station and houses some of the best examples of the impressionist period. For Europe the cost of food in restaurants is comparable, however drinks, and in particular coffee and tea, are expensive and it pays to check the cost before ordering.

Stayed at  Jardins d'Eiffel, Les - Paris, France.
The location of hotel is good to close the Eiffel Tower and subway station.

Stayed at  Choiseul - Nice, France.
Nice is very pleasant although we only spent the one night there before moving down the coast. Best to avoid (from previous experience) during high season, from both a traffic and a 'crowding' point of view. Best bars and restaurants, naturally, are near the seafront- around 20 mins' walk. Buy a 'Carte Isabelle' at the railway station opposite the hotel for a day's unlimited travel (valid until midnight) on all stops between Ventimiglia (Italy), Monaco-Monte Carlo, Nice, Cannes, St Raphael & Frejus. A real bargain at 10 Euros per person, between early June & end of Sep. Do it on a Friday and catch the market at Ventimiglia, one of the best across Europe. Ventimiglia is around 50 minutes from Nice, Monte Carlo around 30 minutes, and St Raphael around 1 hour 20 minutes. The view from the train along the coast, especially between Nice & St Raphael, is fantastic on a good day. One of the best days of our holiday by far!

There are also good coach services from the seafront connecting Nice to most major attractions in the area, but we hired a car for 2 weeks and this was the best way to do it!

Stayed at  Yllen Eiffel, Hotel - Paris, France.
The location was easy walking distance to the Metro and the Eiffel Tower was not too far.
